In August 2022, CFK Africa hosted a bipartisan U.S. Congressional Delegation to explore opportunities to strengthen infectious disease prevention efforts in Kibera and similar urban informal settlements. The delegation illustrates growing bipartisan interest in and support for infectious disease surveillance and public health improvements in historically under-resourced areas, such as informal settlements, to accelerate progress toward a world safe from infectious disease threats.
In the wake of the contentious but largely peaceful 2022 Kenya elections, the delegation also met with political leaders, including outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta, president-elect William Ruto, and opposition leader Raila Odinga, to promote peace and discuss how both countries can continue working toward strengthening democracy. Led by Sen. Chris Coons, the delegation included Sen. Rob Portman, Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, Rep. David Joyce, and Rep. David Price.
