CFK Africa’s three-month Youth Leadership Pathways Curriculum (YLPC) transformed my understanding of leadership. It equipped me with the knowledge and skills to lead with purpose and empathy, and to positively impact others.

Understanding my Leadership Style

Throughout the training sessions, our cohort of 14 explored a diverse range of topics. One of my favorite topics was “Group Dynamics,” where we explored various personalities and how they influence group behavior. I resonated with both the analytical and expressive personality traits, and I learned that I approach challenges with a thoughtful yet bold outlook. I also learned about the importance of empathy, sympathy, and compassion in leadership.

With an emphasis on goal setting, vision, and values, I learned that setting clear, achievable goals and cultivating a strong vision are essential in guiding individuals and groups towards success. Moreover, staying grounded in one’s values helps maintain genuineness and fosters trust among team members.

Putting Practice into Action

At the end of the program, we were required to apply our learning by designing and implementing a community service project. We were tasked with identifying a need in our community, and then designing and implementing a scalable solution. Our team chose to address the issue of menstrual hygiene, a significant challenge faced by girls in our community. In Kibera, many girls are not informed on how to keep themselves in a clean state during their periods.

My solution was to visit Ayany Primary School and conduct a session on menstrual hygiene practices. I was inspired by the girls’ curiosity and enthusiasm to learn. Equipping them with knowledge about menstrual products, proper disposal, basics of menstrual hygiene and self-care tips was empowering, knowing that this knowledge would positively impact their lives.

Lasting Impact

Overall, the impact of the YLPC training extends beyond individual growth. It has equipped all of us as trainees with the tools to make meaningful changes in our community. As future leaders, we hold the power to influence policy, advocate for change, and address social issues that impact our community and nation at large. Through the community service projects, we not only improve the lives of those around us but also inspire others to do the same.

Personally, this training has been a life-changing experience. I have grown as an individual, gaining confidence in my abilities and a deeper understanding of my leadership style. I also formed strong friendships during the sessions, and now have a bigger supportive network.

As I reflect on this transformative journey, I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a powerful movement. The impact of this training on myself and the community at large cannot be understated. My message to other teens out there is to come out and look at the challenges our community is facing, and to try to address them in small ways.

As I step into the future, I carry with me the responsibility to use my new knowledge to effect positive change. Thank you CFK Africa for rising to empower young leaders and shape a brighter future for us and generations to come.
