Empower teenage mothers to share their stories and heal through storytelling.
CFK Africa is raising $75,000 to publish a book of firsthand stories from teenage mothers living in informal settlements (i.e. slums) in Kenya.
A project of CFK’s decades-long Girls Empowerment Program and led by Charlotte Barcott and Siama Yusuf, the book will feature writings and photos from 30 young mothers in CFK’s Funzo Project whose stories are filled with resilience yet remain largely unheard. Titled Her Dreams, the book will empower girls in the program and serve as a resource for other teenage mothers worldwide.
Join us as a foundational supporter of our book and advocacy initiative to educate, inform, and inspire young women around the world about the potential of girls to rise above the greatest of challenges by donating via the form below:

CFK seeks funds to convene the mothers for a writers’ retreat in Naivasha, Kenya, in August 2025 to produce Her Dreams. The transformative writers’ retreat will be the first time any of the girls have been outside of Nairobi, providing a safe space to reflect on their past and dreams for the future. Given the sensitivity around sharing their personal stories, many of which include sexual or family trauma, conducting this program outside of Nairobi in an outdoor and calming setting will allow teenage mothers to process their stories with greater ease. The retreat will include trust- and team-building activities, reflection and writing time, multimedia collection, and book layout sessions, enabling these courageous young women to reclaim their narratives. The retreat and subsequent publication will equip girls with fundamental writing skills, and the validation of their experiences and realization of their creative potential will significantly boost their self-worth and confidence.
For restricted donations of $10,000 and above, a small percentage (10%) supports US administrative costs, helping sustain the essential operations that maximize the impact of our programs and projects on the ground.
If have further questions about a donation or would like to give in a way not listed here, please reach out to our Deputy Director of Communications and Development, Emma Harver at emma.harver@cfkafrica.org
