Kenyan women’s football is buzzing with excitement as Kibera Soccer Women and Vihiga Queens prepare to clash in the FKF Women’s Cup final. Both teams earned their spot after tough semifinal wins, guaranteeing a first-time champion for the tournament. This year’s Cup is also getting a big boost from a new sponsorship, which is set to bring more money and attention to women’s football in Kenya and inspire a new generation of players.
Kibera Soccer Women, a team rooted in resilience from Kenya’s largest informal settlement, secured their place in the final by defeating Kenya Police Bullets 2-0 at Dandora Stadium.
This semifinal match was a highly anticipated rematch, as the two teams had fiercely competed for the FKF Women’s Premier League (WPL) title, with Kibera finishing third with 38 points to Police’s 42.
Maximila Robi broke the deadlock in the 54th minute, catching the Police defense off-guard. Despite strong pressure from their opponents, Faith Mboya sealed the victory with a penalty in stoppage time, making the final score 2-0.
Kibera’s coach, David Bujego, expressed the team’s readiness. saying, “We’re ready to make history,” as they aim for their first major trophy after last year’s narrow 2-1 loss in the final to Ulinzi Starlets.
….
The impact of this final extends far beyond the football pitch. Kibera’s achievements directly challenge common stereotypes about informal settlements, proving that talent and dedication can thrive anywhere.
