Meet John: Aspiring Programmer, Spoken Word Artist, and CFK Alumnus
“Despite coming from challenging backgrounds, we all shared a dream of excelling in school.’
Investing in promising youth from slums.
The Lux Sit Scholarship, created in memory of CFK Africa co-founder Rye Barcott’s late father, Tim Schwartz-Barcott, empowers youth leaders in Kenya by funding their education through secondary school and beyond. As students complete their educational goals, scholarships pass on to new recipients, continuing the cycle indefinitely. All scholars complete leadership and community service.
Tim, a U.S. Marine and passionate advocate for education, peace, and public service, often signed letters with “Lux Sit” — Latin for “Let there be light.” His legacy lives on through this fund, inspiring and transforming the lives of countless youth in some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities.
Together with the complementary Jim Rogers scholarship, CFK Africa’s scholarship programs support 92 vulnerable youth from 21 slum communities across Kenya.
Meet our inaugural class of Lux Sit Scholars. These five exceptional students were selected for their outstanding academic achievement in secondary school. As the first recipients of post-secondary support, they will graduate high school in 2025, poised to take bold steps toward their futures. We can’t wait to see what they pursue next!
