Stories of Purpose: Meet Ashley, a Lux Sit & Jim Rogers Scholar

Ashley is a 14-year-old CFK Africa Lux Sit and Jim Rogers scholar from Kibera studying at Kisumu Girls High School. CFK Africa’s scholarship has allowed Ashley to focus on her studies and explore new co-curricular activities like soccer and robotics, gaining confidence, skills, and a sense of purpose.

My name is Ashley Akoth, and I’m a 14-year-old student from Kibera, Nairobi, currently studying at Kisumu Girls High School. I’m honored to be a CFK Africa scholar under the Lux Sit and Jim Rogers scholarship program, which I joined a year ago. My journey with CFK has transformed not only my education but also contributed greatly to my personal growth.

Thanks to this scholarship, I don’t have to worry about school fees, and I can fully focus on my studies, which has been a huge relief for me and my family. CFK Africa supports us beyond academics, providing scholars with opportunities in co-curricular activities like empowering our talents in sports. CFK Africa also introduced us to robotics, which has been traditionally unavailable to girls, and has shown me that there are many areas where I can develop my skills that could lead to a future career.

Thanks to this scholarship, I don’t have to worry about school fees, and I can fully focus on my studies, which has been a huge relief for me and my family. CFK Africa supports us beyond academics, providing scholars with opportunities in co-curricular activities like empowering our talents in sports such as soccer. CFK Africa also introduced us to robotics, which has been exciting and has shown me that there are many areas where I can develop my skills that can open doors.

CFK Africa’s mentorship program has been a life-changing experience. We’re taught essential life skills that help us avoid negative influences like substance abuse and peer pressure, issues that are quite common in my community. Being part of this program has taught me how to interact with others positively and to build meaningful friendships with other scholars, where we can share experiences and ideas.

In addition to personal development, we also engage in community service projects, like cleaning the environment and planting trees. I’ve learned that even at my age, I can make a difference for the environment and be a role model for others by showing the importance of taking care of our surroundings.

CFK Africa also provides us with revision materials and practice exams from different schools, helping us better prepare and identify areas where we need improvement. Without their support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. This scholarship has made a huge difference in my life. I know I’m on a path toward a better future, and I’m motivated to keep working hard.

Thank you to CFK Africa and donors who make this possible for believing in us. Being part of this program has helped me become a stronger, more focused individual, and I’m excited to keep growing – uplifting my community alongside me.

This holiday season, spread hope and purpose. Your tax-deductible donation to CFK Africa will support youth like Ashley in accessing new opportunities, learning new skills, finding their voice, and transforming their communities along the way.
