CFK Africa’s Lux Sit scholarship provides support to selected elite students to pursue educational opportunities beyond secondary school. CFK Africa’s complimentary Jim Rogers scholarship provides support for students to complete their secondary school education, together investing in 92 vulnerable youth across 8 counties Kenya in 2024. Our scholars inspire us with their accomplishments and aspirations. Meet five current students below:
Halake Lasi Golicha
Lux Sit Scholar
Form 2 at Enoomatasiani Girls Secondary School
My name is Lasi, and I am in Form 2 at Enoomatasiani Girls Secondary School. I studied at a small primary school in our village, where we were sustained by the livestock we had. Sadly, due to severe drought in Kenya, my family lost all our livestock, and we were forced to move to the city when I was in grade seven. I was able to continue studying until I finished my KCPE examination (the end of primary school). By then, I had completely lost hope of continuing my education. CFK Africa’s Lux Sit scholarship changed my life. It has not only supported me financially at school, but I have also learned a lot through mentorship and exploration activities. I have interacted with people who inspire me in every way and learned how to deal with the problems we face at school.
When I finish my studies, I would like to become an astrophysicist. Since I was a little kid, I have been really interested in knowing about the stars. During my free time, I would watch documentaries about nature and successful physicists and listen to their advice. I would also like to help the society where I come from; it is really a different place. If it had not been for CFK Africa, I wouldn’t have been able to continue with my studies like so many other girls from my community. Some people do not value education as much, but I know that the youths there are capable of more. I want to help them deal with the problems they face.
Mohamed Sophia Salim
Jim Rogers Scholar
Form 3 at St Mary’s Girls High School – Igoji
My name is Sophia Salim, and I am in Form 3 at St. Mary’s Girls High School – Igoji. I became more interested in community service when I joined CFK Africa’s Jim Rogers Scholarship Program. I realized that my village faced constant water shortages, forcing the community to walk long distances to fetch water for domestic use. Existing information showed us that groundwater was available in my region for digging a borehole. However, a lack of resources constrained the community from making this a reality. Recognizing access to safe water as a human right, and with guidance from my father (a community mobilizer), I lobbied for support from a local organization that sets up boreholes for communities in the coastal region.
In June 2023, my father secured funding from a donor, and we constructed an electric pump-driven borehole. This was a big leap for the residents of Kisumu Ndogo village in Malindi, as they now have access to clean water within their locality, reaching to over 1000 people. This initiative has inspired not only my community but also my peers, showing that regardless of your status, you can make a lasting positive difference in making our communities better places.
Benjamin Patricia Nyaboke
Lux Sit Scholar
Form 2 at St. Brigid’s Girls’ High School
I am Patricia Nyaboke from Eastleigh slum, Machakos, and I am proud to be a Lux Sit scholar. This scholarship has truly transformed my life and that of my family over the past three years. The worries I had about possibly staying out of school were completely alleviated when I received the good news about being selected as a Lux Sit scholar. My mother was very stressed about my future, but her stress levels have decreased considerably knowing I have a path forward. My elder sister, who is now in university, was also worried about my path and it was affecting her own performance. When we received the confirmation call from CFK Africa that I had been chosen for the scholarship, she felt at peace, which led to her improved performance, and she earned a place at the university.
Being able to stay in school throughout the term has provided a conducive environment for me to study and achieve good grades, making my future even brighter than anticipated. The scholarship has positively changed my life and that of my family. Without it, I would not have gained the skills I have today. The mentorship programs and opportunities to give back to society through community service have made me realize the importance of supporting the community around us. I am committed to not only continuing on with my studies but also coming back to serve my community and ensure that my peers have more opportunities.
Omondi Michael Daniel
Jim Rogers Scholar
Form 2 at Maseno School
When thinking about the future or reflecting on my past, one thing I know for sure is that whatever challenge I may face, I will break through it all and keep pushing my dream career, medicine. I have always had that aspiration. Since I was young, growing up in Manyatta informal settlement, I have been fascinated by the human body and would watch medical and science programmes on DaVinci Learning. Witnessing severe illnesses around me as a child, I could only pray for their recovery. This motivated me to pursue a medical career to help the sick. I have seen people suffer from tumors, lung cancer, and diabetes, changing their normal lives into their worst nightmares, and health disorders keep advancing to more dangerous levels.
I am determined to provide quality health services to the sick. My place at Maseno School is constant thanks to CFK Africa, and I must work hard to excel. Our school is a school of doctors, providing exceptional health practitioners in the global sector. I thank CFK Africa for ensuring I stay in school to pursue my dream. I know my efforts will be rewarded, and one day, I will become one of the greatest doctors in the world. I am 100% certain that I will always keep pursuing that dream to make it a reality.
Margaret Wangechi Wambugu
Jim Rogers Scholar
Form 3 at Kathiani Girls’ High School
My name is Margaret Wangechi Wambugu. I am a 17-year old form three student at Kathiani Girls High School. I have a passion for poetry and spoken word because they help me with critical thinking and in expressing myself. My dream is to become a surgeon, and therefore I aim to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree of Medicine and Surgery once I am done with high school. Living in Kibera has its challenges, but I am fortunate to be a scholarship beneficiary of CFK Africa. CFK Africa’s support has allowed me to focus on my studies and pursue my dreams without the constant worry of financial constraints. The mentorship programs have been especially beneficial, helping me develop not only academically with books and tutors but personally as well.
They also offer opportunities for educational exposure, such as academic trips and team-building activities. Through community service, I have learned the importance of giving back and supporting those around me. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities CFK Africa has provided. I hope to one day give back to my community in the same way, using my skills and knowledge as a surgeon to make a positive impact.
The average cost of a scholarship is $934 USD annually per student, and this number will increase by an estimated 25% in the coming 2025 academic year as to $1,168 the Kenyan government reduces its payments to schools. We aim to bring our Lux Sit scholarship fund to $1M to match our Jim Rogers Endowment which reached its goal of $1M this year thanks to M.A. Rogers. Please consider helping us reach our $1M goal for the Lux Sit scholarship with a tax-deductible gift.
