Meet Garret: An Education Champion in Kibera
“Children deserve to learn in a way that makes learning more interesting to them.”
Youth leaders drive transformative change.
Informal settlements are home to millions of talented youth with ambition and entrepreneurial drive, but cycles of poverty and poor educational outcomes are continually fueled by income and gender inequality, barriers to education and job-training, and high rates of unemployment.
We invest in the next generation of young leaders from informal settlements by providing opportunities for academic and economic success.
As education is key to breaking cycles of poverty, we address education barriers so youth can thrive.
We empower youth in developing career skills to increase their lifetime earning potential.
We nurture the leadership capabilities of youth to advocate for change on issues they care about most.
We infuse technology innovations across our programs to empower youth and amplify their role in community development. By harnessing the power of tech innovations, we ensure that young people have access to vital online education and training opportunities. Our initiatives are shaped and driven by youth voices, who play a central role in guiding program implementation.
Our TechCraft Program fosters sustainable youth employment in trades and technology. The unique dual-track program allows youth to select apprenticeship or digital skills training aligned with their interests and national demand. TechCraft equips youth with life skills, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial mindsets to increase their lifetime earning potential.
We provide scholarships that help students cover the cost of school fees and engage them outside of the classroom, including mentorship, leadership training, career guidance, and community service, empowering them to raise their career aspirations and plan for their futures. Our Lux Sit & Jim Rogers Scholarship Program provides sustainable funding for students to finish secondary school and pursue further education.
Our three-month Youth Leadership Pathways Curriculum (YLPC) engages young leaders in sessions on intentional youth leadership, peer mentorship, and community service. Participants gain skills in identifying community needs and developing scalable, innovative solutions to tackle pressing issues, gaining confidence in leading actionable change.
In Kibera, where schooling options remain limited, many students are at risk of completing primary school without mastering basic skills, impacting their ability to progress with their education or secure future employment. The Best Schools Initiative (BSI) aims to improve learning outcomes for students in informal settlements through targeted interventions co-created with the communities we serve.
